US$100 was all it took for Mr Lui Che-Woo,founder of Macau casino Group, to eclipse Hong Kong real estate investigator Li Ka-Shing as Asia’s richest person, according to the Bloomberg Billionaire.
The daily ranking of the world’s richest people showed on Thursday that gambling mogul’s net worth has risen by US$3.5 billion this year to US$29.6 billion, about US$100 million ahead of Mr Li, who had held the title since April 9,2012 .
The octogenarian shared a similar past with Mr Li. Both fled from China to Hong Kong during World War 2 and made billionaires by investing in real estate as the British Colony was rebuilt. They diversified into other industries with the proceeds. They are grooming their elder sons to take over their businesses.
Mr Lui was born in 1929 in the city of Jiangmen in the province of Guandong . During the invasion of the Japanese, he fled to Hong Kong. He support his family by selling food on the streets of Hong Kong.
As World War 2 ended, Mr Lui bought construction equipment left behind following the American’s invasion of Okinawa,Japan. He imported the machinery to Hong Kong, which was undergoing a reconstruction boom, and made his fortune.
Today, Mr Lui’s wealth is anchored by his 65 percent stake in Galaxy, Asia’s third-largest casino operator by revenue. Galaxy Entertainment owns six of the 35 casinos in Macau.
In my opinion, I think that he was clever. If I were him, I would not have thought of buying machineries. Maybe, his foresight is very good. I learnt to be adventurous and give everything a try. What about your’s ? Please leave your answers in the comment.
